Goodwins Theory

Goodwin’s theory of voyeurism refers to the idea of expressing a sense of sexuality in media texts, deliberately to catch the audience’s attention and to gain sexual pleasure for both genders. This idea is mainly aimed at males, where female artists will be sexually strained to keep the audience’s eyes fixed on the screen. Goodwin argues that females will be objectified in this way by doing such things as revealing sexual facets of their body and by wearing revealing clothes. As well as this, camera angles such as low angle shots and close ups help to emphasise this.

An example of this is in 'Candy Shop' by 50 Cent where producer of this song have related this video to a sexuality concept by making girls reveal themselves by making them wear seductive clothing which are revealing to a male audience as this is the type of audience the sellers want to attract. The use of Low angle shots in this video shows that the creators are purposely showing exposed legs to the audince, which signifies a seductive nature. The fact of the girls wearing revealing clothes keeps the audiences eyes peeled to the video as its also attractive to the eye. The audience can see that the video becomes more attractive as it goes along to the theme of being a 'Candy Shop'.

Goodwins theory also shows that there is a correlation between lyrics and the song as many songs of the modern era are now becoming more and more like that as it gives the audince something else to think about.

For example the use of seductive girls representivness in this video shows a correlation in the lyrics as the chorus of 'thats that s***' showing a girl dancing seductively in front of the men. Its become like the norm in a rap video for them to have girls, jewlerry and cars which falls into the categories of the goodwins theory of intertexuality and voyeursim in a music video.
